Having very few sites and information that dealt with this subject, I took the initiative to dedicate this part to this operation.
You will find photos , explanations and an illustrative video .
I hope that you will find all the answers you are looking for there and that I will have been able to inform and reassure all the people who have contacted me directly for additional information.
Here is a short video explaining how it works and how it is managed (without complex medical jargon) carried out by a patient on the care relating to the Malone operation (knowing that there are currently 2 Malone operations), an operation which remains very rare for adults.
This page is dedicated to giving some explanations on the care provided during Malone’s operation . Having very few sites and information that dealt with this subject, I took the initiative to dedicate this part to this operation. You will find photos , explanations and a space for discussion where you can ask your questions (about this Malone operation) to which I will try to answer as best as possible.
As for the other operation (caecostomy) , if you would like more information I will attach links in the comments.
Irrigation Procedure for Malone’s Surgery Care
Open the flow regulator. Let the water flow for 5 to 10 minutes.
If everything works well the small mill should turn, otherwise check (that it is properly in place).
– Remove the probe
– Stay on the toilet for about 30 minutes
– Clean the Malone with water using gentle movements then apply a small, dry, non-sterile compress. You can place a tiny dab of petroleum jelly on it.
– Finally, rinse the cannula and leave the bag exposed to the air, otherwise there is a risk of mold (especially when you go to the hospital).
Some important information:
– You have the right to renew your equipment twice a year (reimbursed by social security)
– Choose natural Vaseline because the others are a little more toxic
– If you no longer have any compresses, you can use paper towels.
– 1 hour after treatment, be sure to listen to your body because you may still experience colic, minor pain, gurgling, and feel a little unwell. This is nothing serious and you can return to the toilet.
– When traveling, make sure that the toilets are properly equipped to accommodate all your equipment.
-Remember to do your treatments 3 to 5 times a week following your doctor’s recommendations and that it is for life.
– In case you do not have the equipment and you need to be hospitalized urgently (and you have no one to bring you the equipment), you can contact your pharmacy to switch the prescription by email to another pharmacy closer to your hospital (sometimes they deliver).
Stay very attentive to your body because some people may require a special diet (without fiber in my case) otherwise you could be subject to colic, diarrhea, pain.
As soon as these symptoms appear, please consult your doctor to determine the causes.
For information, very often, the causes come from these foods: Mushrooms, onions, green vegetables, raw fruits, etc.
For better monitoring, try to make a list of the foods used in your menus (especially at the start) and gradually remove them as the effects are felt.
Remember that while this treatment is life-changing and will provide you with significant relief, accepting it also means accepting all the constraints that go with it….

One of the major drawbacks of the Malone procedure is the use of a large amount of water in each treatment.
You would first need to find the right temperature to fill the bag (2 to 5l) following the doctor’s advice) which already requires a certain quantity of water.
When you fill the water bag, be careful not to drop the bag by taking both handles at the same time, otherwise the water will spill to one side and everything will be on the floor.
When you hang the bag on the IV pole or whatever, be careful that everything doesn’t break, otherwise you will have to pump.
During the treatment, we are required to flush the toilet at least 5 times, knowing that a tank contains a good amount of waste.
At the end of the treatment, I often have to wait between 2 and 3 hours and flush the toilet again because there is colic and the intestines are not completely cleaned.
Cleaning of the bathroom and equipment is required once completed.
In theory this treatment takes place every 2 days but it can happen that it is every 24 hours because it depends on the food that passes or not.
In addition, we have to carry out several machines per day when we have leaks.
Important note for some uneducated people
This information is given on a personal basis to certain people (more or less close) who allow themselves to give false information and to judge certain of my actions while they have no knowledge of what such an illness can cause.
